Physical Features Of Zebras

The zebra is one of the most unique African animals in terms of its appearance. The physical features of zebras make them unique and impressive to see. While they do look like horses there are various different features of zebras that set them apart. The sizes of zebras can also be different in many cases.

Of course the most notable physical feature is that of the stripes. The stripes are formed as a result of skin coloration. The width and quantity of stripes can vary by zebra.

The hair that is featured on a zebra goes well beyond the black stripes that a zebra has. The mane of a zebra may look like that of a horse’s mane but it has different physical characteristics in terms of what the hairs are made out of. The hair is shorter than that of a typical horse’s hair. The hair is also stronger and more erect in stance.

Although the tail of a zebra has an appearance similar to that of a horse’s tail the end of a zebra’s tail is different. The zebra’s tail end is tufted. This sets it apart from other animals in the wild and works as a means of cooling the zebra through the hot weather in the continent.

Also, while the coat is noted for being striped it is also noted for being able to withstand heat. Like other African animals the zebra will need to survive in the heat of the continent. Fortunately the zebra’s coat is capable of dissipating a majority of heat that it comes in contact with.

The stripes on the coat are also noted for their ability to confuse other predators in the wild. African animals like lions and cheetahs will be incapable of distinguishing between a zebra and other things at night or at dawn. This is one of the best defensive features that any African animals can have.

There are different kinds of zebras that have different features. A Grevy’s zebra is the larger of the two most common kinds. This type of zebra is about fifty to sixty inches in height and can weigh up to a thousand pounds. The Burchell’s zebra, on the other hand, is smaller and has a greater variety of coat patterns that can be found. This type of zebra is also less than fifty five inches in height and about five hundred pounds in height.

The physical features of zebras are notable among all African animals. These features include stripes, shorter hair, a coat that can handle heat and various size differences based on the type of zebra. These are all features tat make the zebra impressive among African animals.
